ECTS Methodology and Grading System

The CBA recognizes fully and implements the principles set out in the ECTS Users’ Guide (version 2015). The CBA implements the ECTS as a tool to guarantee the quality of mobility activities and transparency of recognition procedures. One Latvian credit point is defined as a one-week full-time study workload (40 hours). A workload of a full-time study year in higher education programmes is 40 credit points (60 ECTS). Latvian credit point system is compatible with ECTS. The number of ECTS credits is found by multiplying the number of Latvian credit points by a factor of 1.5. The amount of credits points of the study programs implemented by the CBA is calculated in accordance with the legal acts of the Republic of Latvia. The CBA provides short learning cycle study programs (two and a half years long) and awards first level higher professional education degrees/professional qualifications (according to the legal acts of the Republic of Latvia). The number of credit points for each study program is evaluated and changed if necessary on regular basis to take into account the changing needs of the job market. The average amount of credit points for one study program at the CBA is 88 credit points (132 ECTS), the average amount of credit points one study semester (there are two study semesters at the CBA – Fall and Spring semesters) at the CBA is 18 credit points (27 ECTS). The average amount of one study course at the CBA is 2 credit points (3 ECTS). All study programs includes two traineeships, each 8 credit points (12 ECTS), and development of one qualification paper (8 credit points, 12 ECTS). The Law on Higher Education Institutions (1995) regulates the assessment of the academic higher education obtained. Students’ assessment is carried out using a 10 point scale according to the following criteria:

  • The volume and quality of obtained knowledge;
  • Obtained skills;
  • Attitude towards learning;
  • Dynamics of learning achievements.

If in a regular test it is not possible to assess achievements in the 10-point scale, academic staff may use “pass” or “fail”.
